Berat Castle

Berat Castle, known locally as the Kala, crowns the hill above the city and has watched over the Osum valley for more than two thousand years. Unlike many European fortresses reduced to empty ruins, the Kala is a living quarter — people still live inside its walls, and a web of cobbled streets winds between houses, churches and ancient foundations.
What to See Inside
Within the fortress walls you'll find the remains of dozens of Byzantine churches, many in evocative states of partial ruin, alongside the Onufri Iconographic Museum, housed in the cathedral of the Assumption. The ramparts themselves offer sweeping views over Mangalem, Gorica and the river below.
Visiting
The climb to the castle is steep and cobbled, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water in summer. Allow at least a couple of hours to wander properly. Entrance fees and opening hours can change — confirm locally before your visit.
